How Rodents Are Causing Expensive Auto Insurance Claims. Mouse chewing car wires.

Smart tips to help CT business owners and residents avoid costly vehicle damage, vehicle downtime, and unnecessary auto insurance claims.

At V.F. McNeil Insurance, we’ve seen our fair share of unexpected claims—but one that’s been showing up more often in recent years is rodent damage to vehicles. While it might sound like something out of a cartoon, it’s a very real—and very costly—issue affecting both personal and commercial vehicles across Connecticut.

We recently received a claims advisory from one of our trusted insurance partners, Quincy Mutual Group, about how rodents are causing expensive auto insurance claims.  This notification confirmed a steady rise in rodent-related auto insurance claims.

And this isn’t just a problem for personal vehicles parked in the driveway. If you’re a business owner in Connecticut and your business depends on a fleet of vehicles—especially in industries like HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, or Landscaping—rodent damage can sideline trucks, delay jobs, and hurt your bottom line.

What’s Causing the Rise in Rodent Damage?

According to Quincy Mutual Group, this uptick in claims is linked to a manufacturing shift that began around the year 2000. Automotive manufacturers (OEMs) started using soy-based wiring insulation as an eco-friendlier alternative to traditional petroleum-based materials.

While environmentally conscious, this soy-based insulation emits a scent and contains organic compounds that attract rodents. Once inside the engine compartment, rats, mice, and other pests chew through wiring, causing serious electrical damage and operational issues.

The result? Thousands of dollars in repairs and unexpected vehicle downtime.

Real Cost, Real Consequences

Rodent damage is far from minor. The average cost of repairs—especially involving complex electrical systems—can be significant. And for business owners who rely on vehicles daily, every hour a truck is off the road is an hour of lost productivity.

For Connecticut contractors managing multiple vehicles, this can mean missed service calls, rescheduled appointments, and unhappy customers.

How to Prevent Rodent Damage to Your Vehicles

Quincy Mutual Group offers several smart prevention tips for both personal and commercial vehicle owners:

  • Peppermint-scented deterrent tape
Rodents dislike the strong smell of peppermint. Wrapping this tape around engine wiring can help deter nesting and chewing.
  • Ultrasonic devices
These emit high-frequency sounds that are unpleasant for rodents but inaudible to humans. They can be placed under the hood for added protection.
  • Regular engine inspections
Check engine compartments periodically for signs of droppings, nests, or gnawed wires—especially if the vehicle has been idle for long stretches.
  • Secure parking practices
Whenever possible, park in enclosed garages or well-lit areas, and keep surrounding vegetation trimmed to limit rodent access.

A Reminder for Connecticut Business Owners
