(Even If You’ve Never Done One Before)
Retirements are milestones—but if we’re being honest, many workplaces don’t always celebrate them as thoughtfully as they deserve.
In our case, this was the first retirement celebration we’ve ever hosted, and we wanted it to be special.
After nearly 19 years of dedication, loyalty, and impact, we wanted to send our colleague off in a way that felt deeply personal, joyful, and reflective of the role she played in our workplace culture. What followed was a behind-the-scenes effort that involved quiet coordination, teamwork, creativity—and a lot of sneaking around the office like ninjas.
Props to our team, especially since her workstation sits directly across from where much of the planning took place! But we’re always up for a challenge.
Here’s what we pulled together—completely without her knowledge:
- We invited her family as a surprise.
- We layered in lighthearted insurance puns throughout the signage.
- We gathered well wishes, favorite memories, and retirement-daydreams from the team.
- And we pulled together photos spanning nearly two decades to create a memories reel that played overhead during the celebration.
The result? A complete surprise—and a moment we’ll all remember.
We created the short video below to capture the spirit of the day. But we also wanted to share how we pulled it off—because we know other small, privately owned businesses across Connecticut may find themselves asking the same question we did:
“Where do we even start?”
Why We’re Sharing This
If you’re a Connecticut business owner or manager facing your first retirement celebration, we hope this gives you ideas, confidence, and permission to make it meaningful—even if you don’t have a formal playbook.
- You don’t need a big budget.
- You do need intention, teamwork, and heart.
What Made This Celebration Special
(Ideas You Can Borrow)
1. Quiet Coordination
Planning without tipping someone off takes teamwork. Assign roles, keep emails tight, and move quickly—and quietly.
2. Family Inclusion
Inviting loved ones added emotional depth and made the moment bigger than the office walls. (Luckily for us, they’re also clients—so we already had their contact information!)
3. Personal Touches Over Perfection
Handwritten notes, shared memories, inside jokes, favorite foods, wine, and floral choices helped elevate the experience. Her husband provided some great insider tips.
4. Visual Storytelling
Old photos—even imperfect ones—sparked laughter, nostalgia, and meaningful connection.
5. Humor That Fits Your Industry
Leaning into insurance-themed puns kept the mood light, fun, and unmistakably us.
This celebration reminded us that honoring people well isn’t about formality—it’s about recognition.
If you’re a small to mid-sized Connecticut business preparing for a retirement party and aren’t sure how to mark the moment, we hope this inspires you to create something authentic, personal, and unforgettable.

One Final Consideration
Any time you host a business-related event—whether on-site or off-premises—it’s always a smart idea to consider your business insurance coverage. Event-related liability, guests, and alcohol service can introduce exposures you may not think about in advance. A quick check-in with your insurance agent can help ensure you have the right coverage in place—just in case.
