Eliminating Odors in Your Home: A CT Family’s Surprise Behind the Wall

Eliminating Odors in Your Home: A CT Family’s Surprise Behind the Wall. Bedroom with open walls.

What Can Cause Musty, Unpleasant, and Potentially Unsafe Odors in Older Homes?

Every home has its own unique scent. Some houses smell like fresh laundry and lemony cleaning sprays. Others? Well, let’s just say some have that “something you just can’t quite put your finger on” odor.

One of our team members had been battling exactly that kind of odor for years, despite all their attempts to remedy the mystery. They’d lived in their home for years, and every time it rained, got humid, or turned into a full-blown Connecticut summer sweat-fest, a particular smell would creep in—an unmistakable scent they lovingly dubbed the “Old House” aroma.

In addition to this unwelcome scent, these two Connecticut homeowners also noticed respiratory symptoms, especially when entering the master bedroom. They regularly cleaned surfaces, washed linens, and dusted walls, light fixtures, and more—assuming the room was just extra dusty due to its age. But nothing seemed to alleviate the issue.

Then came the breaking point. A severe storm hit, and despite three recent gutter cleanings (yes, three), water began pouring into their bedroom one night. It turns out a windstorm had launched enough nearby debris into the gutters to clog them once more—because, apparently, trees two houses over still hold a grudge.

That was the final straw. Time to renovate.

In the process of updating their bedroom—expanding closet space, modernizing the feel, and replacing water-damaged walls—they uncovered a secret. Behind one of the walls was strong evidence that a squirrel family had once claimed squatter’s rights. Unfortunately, it seems they may not have made it out before escrow closed.

To make matters worse, the insulation in several areas was damp and ruined—indicating there had likely been a leak for much longer than they realized.

Let’s just say: mystery odor (and allergens), solved.

Since the renovation, not only does the room feel brand new—it smells brand new. And the respiratory symptoms? Gone. There’s a powerful reminder here: your home may be telling you something long before the damage becomes obvious. Whether it’s persistent smells, squeaky floors, or rain where rain shouldn’t be, it’s all part of the story your house is trying to tell you (in this case: “Check the walls, Cheryl.”)

Home Maintenance: More Than Just Cosmetics

Odors, moisture, pest damage—it’s not just unpleasant, it’s potentially a sign of hidden issues that could affect your home’s safety, structure, and yes, even your insurance. Keeping up with home maintenance not only improves your quality of life (and olfactory experience), but also helps to:

  • Avoid costly repairs down the line

  • Keep your home in line with insurance inspection standards

  • Prevent claims that could impact your future premiums

  • Preserve or even increase your home’s value

When inspectors come out to assess a home for insurance, they’re looking at more than just the age of the roof. They’re checking for moisture issues, signs of pests, mold, structural integrity—and more. Keeping your home buttoned up helps keep your insurance rates reasonable and your coverage solid.
