It’s most likely safe to say, nobody wants to experience a hurricane; and we certainly hope we don’t in 2017.  However, from experience we all know it’s a possibility once we enter the season.

So, the key here is to be proactive and not reactive.  Surprisingly though, many people tend not to heed caution.  Lack of preparedness as we’ve all seen in the news, can leave us with worse circumstances.  At V.F. McNeil Insurance, we are trying to help spread the word about the importance of being preparedness-minded.  The following are some tips from our friends at Hanover Insurance on weathering a hurricane, before, during and after the storm.  Please take time to review each for your knowledge and safety.

Before:

Make a Home Inventory – Claims are processed 50-100% faster when customers have a home inventory.
Construct a Plan – Create a plan of action for you and your family in the event of a hurricane and you are apart.  Review it and be sure everyone knows the steps.
Weather Alerts – Sign up for and pay attention to them
Emergency Supplies – Compile a stock of battery-powered flashlights, a radio, extra batteries, medicines, first aid handbook and kit, a week’s worth of non-perishable food and water.
Travel & Communication – Charge your mobile devices and fill your car with gas.
Contact Information – program all emergency phone numbers, including your independent insurance agents, in your mobile device.
Home Repairs – To avoid greater problems from high winds or rain, fix loose boards, shingles, shutters, and down spouts.
Prep Your Fridge – Turn it to the coldest setting so food will last longer if the power goes out.
Don’t Forget the Pets – Research pet-friendly hotels and shelters in case you need to evacuate.
Talk to Your Insurance Agent – Be sure to review your coverage to make sure it’s still the right protection for you.
Evacuation – If advised to do so, don’t wait.  Go as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute rush.

During:

Friends & Family - Check in when possible.
Windows & Doors – Keep them closed always, and if possible, boarded up with wooden or metal shutters.  Stay away from each and preferable locate yourself in the center of the room, or in an inside room.
Flooding – If water starts to enter your home, turn off electricity immediately

After:

Evacuation - If you’ve experienced one, wait for official notice stating that it is safe to re-enter your neighborhood/home.
Notify Your Insurance Agent – Contact your insurance professional as soon as possible if you’ve experiences any damage or flooding.
Create a List – Include damaged items and take photograph and/or video if possible.  DO NOT dispose of damaged items without prior approval from your insurance claims adjuster.
Keep Records – Accurate records of temporary repairs or expenses will be considered in the claims process.
